SPORTS? REALLY?

I’ve never understood the appeal of sports.  Even the idea of competition to me is barbaric.  For every winner that feels great there’s a loser that feels like crap.  There is the person who worked incredibly hard all his or her life to be the best and just isn’t.  Then there are the lavish stadiums that hold enormous amounts of people cheering for one team or another to get the snot beat out of them.  Doesn’t this sound a little like Christians to the lions or Bullfighting?  Through the centuries we’ve stopped putting the loser to death even though sometimes the loser wants to die and that’s about the only thing that’s changed.  I think wars are started because some country wants to prove there the best or to be dominant over another.  Looking at it that way I guess we do still put the loser to death.  I could go on about how destructive I think competition is but I am in a vast minority.

That being said…I live with a sports nut.  My dear husband would rather sit on the couch and watch football all Sunday long than do any thing else.  It  gets even better if golf is on another  channel so he can flip back and forth.  For me the only thing worse than watching it is listening to it and why do all golf announcers have to be Australian.  Is the accent meant to make the commentary less annoying?

When Craig and I met he was still rooting for BYU.  The same college that kicked him out for being gay.  Misplaced loyalty?  It took me years to break through that brainwash.  He does make more and more compromises for me as time goes by but he still sets the lap top on a chair next to him and puts on a sports channel so he can keep track of golf and football scores as we’re playing Cribbage.

Here come the pictures.  Does this look fun?

OK maybe that one does but how about this…

Ouch.  I guess for the millions they get paid they can put up with a little pain.  Besides, the fans love it when they bring out the stretcher.

This is a huge adrenalin rush.  don’t you think?

Then there are the stupid traditions that surprise them every time.

What’s next, Nascar and Curling?  I will draw the line.

Paul’s way more competitive than he lets on…You should see the looks I get if I win 3 cribbage games in a row. Thought I should comment on this one so there would be a comment since Paul’s commenting peeps are all in Hawaii – hope y’all are having a great time!

My family and I grew up as sports fanatics. It’s great fun. Some of my best memories are centered around the teams I cheer for. That’s why it was hard to stop cheering for BYU. Not a lot of good memories for me with my dad – he just was not equipped to relate to a gay son -but we did share our love of BYU sports, U of U, Utah Jazz and of course the one time he took me to a Utah Stars game back in the 60′s. Maybe I’ll just have to take Paul to a 49er football game and spring for the luxury box so he’ll have some distractions.

I loved the years I had season tickets to the Jazz games – back when it was in the old Salt Palace. Kristin and I would regularly go together – and we had a lot of fun.

And the excitement of being in the arena when the Jazz were playing Chicago (Michael Jordan days) – were so far behind that half the fans had left. We moved down into really close seats and watched John Stockton hit several 3 point shots and come back to win the game in the last 8 seconds… I think that was in 1998? Kristin might remember.

I have no interest in playing football. But I do enjoy a friendly game of volleyball…

Brandon/Jen are already in Hawaii… Ashley heads there tomorrow… Kristin & family on Saturday, and I leave on Sunday. (I have an essential oil booth I need to man on Saturday.) I’m sure your peeps will post as soon as they have a chance to read :)

Allison – I think I remember that game…it was before Stockton and Malone could really compete with Jordan but they came back miraculously…I was listening on the radio…soooo fun that you were there…I’m jealous.

And now that Paul understands…I’m sure he is too.

Yeah….I’m not into sports. I like to play them (not football, however)… and I can watch them for a few minutes, but they get boring. I think basketball is the only one I can stand to watch for more than 20 minutes, and that’s only if the team I like is winning (the only thing that draws me to ‘like’ a team is the people I’m with. Haha).

I was lucky (and always thankful) that Justin wasn’t a sports fan. I’ll make sure to look for that same quality in the next hopeful who may come along…

Can’t wait for Hawaii tomorrow!! Love you guys- wish you were coming with us. :)

That last comment from me was in response to Craigs post not Ashleys.

I totally agree with you here, Paul! I have never enjoyed watching or participating in team sports. Especially American football — it’s just so violent and looks painful! And when you go to the games, people scream and jump and just make a general fool of themselves over some guys kicking a ball on a field. Seriously? Is it really that cool? If that passion were redirected to something more productive… I can understand going for the social aspect of it, but the sports themselves just seem like mindless entertainment to me.

That said, I love playing (not watching) “sports” like foosball, pool, and bowling where there is still skill involved, but it’s less physically taxing and dangerous.

I used to be really good at pool and foosball and that was enough. For me it wasn’t about winning sombody else it was about being good at it. It’s nice to have someone on my side.
