I forgot to say his kids came home in tears because they weren’t going to heaven. How cruel and arrogant we were as young Mormon’s toward the Gentiles. I wonder where that came from.

I remember my boss at McDonald’s, George Greenwald, telling me about his kids in school. He was raised in the mid-west and when you sign up to be a McDonald’s franchisee it’s like a mission call. When the time comes you go where they tell you. His first store was American Fork, Utah. He and his wife knew nothing about the Mormons, but shortly after they moved their his kids came home from school and informed them that they couldn’t go to heaven because the other kids had told them that only Mormons have the true church and get into heaven.

I do miss being the best tenor, also

I have a hunch that mom and dad waited for Ida to leave and then disappeared the dress. And as for ballet, I think I only went five or six times until I got the shoes but was sure I wasn’t getting the tights.

Why else would she have given you a princess outfit? But then why take it away? How confusing… How long did you keep up with the ballet? Did it stop after the TV incident? Your dad has never stopped loving big TV’s.

It’s great to hear your story Paul, and I’m very excited to read more, even though I’m sure it’s difficult to write. Writing about my own journey out of Mormonism and making it public was an incredibly therapeutic process for me. It did end up offending some people. But it inspired a lot of people, too. Most of all, it helped me feel more authentic and understand than I’ve ever felt before, and helped me clarify a lot of things in my own mind. Keep writing. The world needs it, and so do you. Thanks for your courage!

Yay for Aunt Ida! How sad though that the princess outfit disappeared from your young life so quickly. I also think it’s pretty special that your Dad supported your interest in ballet so readily.

Ida from Idaho? That’s almost as bad as a grade school classmate of mine named Utahna. I guess it could have been worse if we had all been born in Massachusetts.

Maybe it’s time for those tights and cup now…
